Course Description The course describes a singular, high visual-impact house built using traditional materials and shapes but at the same time catering for the functional needs of a modern family.
This seminal project illustrates how architectural design can deliver occupant-friendly functions in terms of comfortable livable environments and at the same time explore new structural and spatial solutions.
The course describes the building with a broad range of images, technical drawings, a construction detail plan with legend, and an introductory text.
On completion of the course, you will be able to explain how the building’s design dialogues with context and how interior spatial layout can be developed as a function of user requirements.
Learning Objectives – after reading the article and studying the drawings, you will be able to:
Analyze how the architecture relates harmoniously to its natural context, echoing the lines of the surrounding countryside.
Motivate the choice of materials used, and assess the interior layout and the extent to which it delivers occupant comfort.
Analyze how the building envelope and frame interrelate and how they contribute to the overall esthetic result.
Describe how the building’s design is the result of in-depth analysis of traditional architectural forms that have subsequently been adapted to contemporary living needs.
