Course Description The course examines a private residence located in a huge city, an oasis in the midst of a bustling metropolis. The architectural program focuses on mediating between exteriors and interiors with a contemporary design that while responding to innovative esthetic canons at the same time ensures occupant comfort with practical, livable spaces. The course material includes sketches and technical drawings showing the design process, numerous photographs, construction-detail drawings with accompanying legend, and an introductory text. On completing the course, you will be able to describe how the design strategies dialogue with the building materials chosen and how the particular site influenced the layout of the different residential functions.
Learning Objectives – after reading the article and studying the drawings, you will be able to:
Analyze the relationship between (exterior and interior) structures and finishes, and describe how this contributes to the final esthetic result.
Explain how the design process is the result of study into the possible layout solutions available with a multi-volume configuration aiming to provide maximum occupant comfort.
Identify and analyze how the layout chosen for the residential spaces is a function of the particular urban context, and describe the measures adopted to ensure a sustainable building.
Explain the reasons behind the particular choice of materials in terms of local availability coupled with the need to provide comfort zone environments.
