3ndy Studio
NOOB is a single-family house built in the municipality of Dolo, in the province of Venice, for a small family unit. The uniqueness of this building is the particular attention about the absence of the architectural barriers, enriched from studies on materials and technological devices in order to be able to offer the most possible independent kind of life to the customer as tetraplegic. Tetraplegia is the consequence of a cervical vertebras trauma which causes the missed control of the muscles and also the paralysis of the limbs and the thorax. The paralysis, that can be more or less dangerous according to the trauma, in this particular case hits the inferior limbs and partially the thorax and the superior limbs of the subject.
The main goal of this project is to realize, for the client, an house without any kind of barriers and obstacles. The Italian law in force provides some dispositions in order to support the passing and the elimination of architectural barriers in private buildings. The NOOB project, in fact, features some smart solutions as pavement on a unique level, sliding doors and wider spaces between the furniture in order to make simple the passage of a wheelchair. Furniture is tailored designed: from the wardrobe to the sink, each element is placed at a right height from the planking level (65cm) so that also a subject on a wheelchair can completely enjoy it. However some ad hoc devices have also been added: on the shelf of the kitchen and the sink, for example, some plates have been placed in order to simplify the use of pretty heavy kitchen utensils as the disability strongly limits the user in the repositioning and raising of the objects. Also the arrangement of the furniture in the bathroom is tailor-made: there are wide spaces both central to allow the movement of the wheelchair and around the restroom to make them usable by anyone. The shower, moreover, does not feature differences in height between the inner and the outer sides of the compartment and, perfectly according to the law, it is provided with a built-in bench .
Materials are equally designed in order to facilitate the passage of a wheelchair. The house is completely paved with wood that, as a natural material, features a not uniform color that hide the signs of the passage of the wheelchair . Instead, the bathrooms’ pavement and walls are made of a particular colored resin which does not allow to the wheelchair of gliding in case of wet floor.
The distinctiveness of that house comes also from its technological devices. In one of the two bathrooms there is a ceiling rail on which passes an hook which is linked to a particular harness which allows the user to enjoy the sink and the bidet from a nearly erect position, but above all it allows to go in and go out from the circular hydro-massage bathtub located at an extremity of the room. Another cutting-edge technological feature concerns the home automation system. Besides the temperature, in fact, the control of lights, doors, gate and alarm is centralized as well and, in order to make the control easier, a Smartphone application that allows to modify easily the status of each of the elements previously mentioned has also been created.
This concept of abolition of any kind of obstacles, besides being well visible in all the above-listed more or less originals practical devices, is also visually present through the different use of the materials. Some walls are, in fact, completely made of glass in order to remove the perceptiveobstacles that divide the inner spaces from the external ones. Also the emphasis of the horizontal surfaces compared to their vertical supports is very useful in this sense. The choice of placing near the glass wall a table with a thick wooden shelf, but with supports and chairs completely transparent, contributes to this perception of absence of obstacles that want to be the thread of all the project.
This particular attention to the knocking down of any kind of physical or mental obstacles, is also expressed on the outside of the house through some devices about the planning of the covering. The house, in fact, has been conceptually thought as an horizontal stretched parallelepiped that emerges from the green. Emerging, the parallelepiped raises the green and “breaks it” on those which are the longest sides of the solid creating various accesses to the interiors, while, along the short sides, the green creates two sloped roof bringing the green around the house until above the covering. Also the externals of the house are designed according to the Italian law for the knocking down of the architectural barriers also in the private settings : there is, in fact, a paved floor which is located at the same level that allows to reach easily every access point of the house and of the outside of the property. Furthermore, a ramp with a slope of 5% leads to the space designated as an external parking lot and the only obstacle between the inner and the outer places is a rounded small step which is 1 cm high.
But this is not all. If we still talking about the concept of the knowing down of any barriers, the above-mentioned green ramps have a dual purpose: they want to completely integrate the green spaces with the architecture, but they also want to make possible, at least at a perceptive level, the access of the wheelchairs to every part of the house, hypothetically and potentially also to the roof.
The project has succeeded in knocking down barriers in all their shapes. The goal of this project was trying to introduce new devices and new technologies as much as possible, but with the ability of blending them with the whole architecture in order to obtain an harmonious result that makes this house appealing to all kind of people. Since everything is perfectly integrated, the beauty and the simplicity of the surfaces have become the main features of this house.

Curriculum

Marco Mazzetto (1973) and Alessandro Lazzari (1972), right after achieving their master’s degree at the University of Architecture in Venice (IUAV), established in 2002 the 3ndy Studio in the province of Venice. Since the start, the activity of the Studio has been interested in planning, researching and implementing architectural projects involving different levels of design: from the objects up to the buildings and the urban planning.
The Studio also competes in national and international planning contests, obtaining various mentions and awards. Nowadays 3ndy Studio is a consolidate reality, which proudly boasts several successful works in Italy, and which represents a meeting point for skills and personalities.
Since 2011the Studio has been working also abroad, in Qatar, in Djibouti, and in the UAE, in important collaborations for the realization of interior design projects in major facilities for both residential and commercial & business purposes.
