Mixed Use  /  Future
Sanjay Puri Architects
The extensive project brief for this mixed use building includes retail spaces, restaurants, exhibition spaces, an auditorium and offices.
The site is located in Nashik which is in the north western region of Maharashtra. The city's tropical location and high altitude makes it a wet and dry climatic zone.
The average highest recorded temperature goes up to 30.7°C in summer whereas the average lowest recorded temperature goes up to 18.5°C in winter.
Located in the heart of the city the site of 23,361.34 sq.m is surrounded by roads on all sides with a main arterial city road on the northern side.
The government as the client for this building wants to create a city Centre for the city.
The extensive built up area totaling 54,385.99 sq.m is created in fragmented volumes of 4 m x 4 m grid that step back gradually from the arterial road side reducing the height and scale of the building perceptibly.
This fragmentation simultaneously creates north facing terraces that augment a large ground level garden created centrally, generating large landscaped spaces equivalent to the plot area.
The building creates a sculptural internal space that echoes the organic hill settlements of old Indian cities capturing the traditional urban fabric in a contemporary language.
The gradual stepping facilitates in creating spaces which engage the user with the built environment and creates green spaces equivalent to the plot area, thus giving back to the eco logical cycle.
Punctuated by sky lit courtyards, each part of this large building derives natural light and has central green interactive spaces.
The east, west and south sides are screened with stones screens derived from traditional Indian architecture minimizing the heat gain from these sides in response to the hot climate of the region. Whereas the large windows on the northern side allow enough north light into the interiors of the building.
Temperatures are in excess of 30°C for 8 months of the year with the sun in the southern hemisphere.
The activities within the building are segregated to allow separate access points to each space individually while all of them are connected through the extensive landscaped spaces.
Designed contextually the City Center is responsive to the climate, energy efficient and sustainable.
The design facilitates social and community activities for the people of the city generating large sheltered open spaces to engage the inhabitants of the building as well as the city inhabitants.
