The mountainous spine of Mallorca curls gently down to meet the sea in the unspoilt north eastern corner of the island. DSA Architects International is proud to have completed a second project in this region close by the wild coastline and natural park of the Llevant peninsular.
‘Fitness, heathy exercise and wellbeing catered for in installations of the vanguard’ says one of the first, unanimously five star user reviews to pop up describing the new DSA Architects CVCC, Cap Vermell Country Club.
Following on from the 2016 opening of the award winning Park Hyatt Cap Vermell the area now houses The Cap Vermell Country Club, a development that raises the bar for sporting, recreational and hospitality provision on the Balearics. A sports centre with 25 metre indoor pool, outdoor pools, tennis courts, paddle courts, it also fully caters for fitness training and boasts a gym equipped with the highest quality equipment. Catering and relaxation are not forgotten with kids rooms, sauna, steam room, restaurant/ bistro, terraces and barbeque areas. At the end of the day the more exclusive club areas come to the fore as the Country Club doubles up as club house for the adjacent golf courses no less than four of which are within easy reach.
Located off of the road out of Canyamel towards the golf course the new building intercedes between the valley and the neighboring Hyatt resort hotel. The hotel was conceived as a hillside village in a vernacular style to blend in with its surroundings, The Country Club achieves a different kind of harmony with its setting and is unmistakably a product of the twenty first century. It does have pitched roofs and walls that mix brickwork and tiles with pale local stone, but these elements are abstracted and mixed in unusual ways with tall wide windows, a stronger colour scheme and iridescent tiles that gives the building a distinctive presence all of its own. The result is a structure that is not so tall that it shocks the eye and on the south west side the bulk of what would otherwise be a long façade is broken up with a series of pitched roof projections that reference both the vernacular of the region and other more distant traditions, Georgian terraces or a row of holiday beach huts.
Environmentally the building is heavyweight, high thermal mass, orientated carefully towards the South West with glazing and projecting roofs carefully studied to maximise passive solar gain from the low winter sun and provide shade from the high summer sun. Water heating is by means of bio-mass boilers. Rain water run off was designed to be available for collection and reuse.
The composition can be described as two slightly offset rectangles punctuated with internal courtyards, the projections reach across raised terraces or galleries and link out towards semi covered seating areas, barbeque space and the outdoor pools. Functionally one rectangle houses the restaurants and hospitality areas the other the indoor pool with the gymnasium and fitness spaces. The end result is to blur the distinction between inside and outside as well befits a building designed for the pursuit of leisure located in a popular tourist destination with a mild Mediterranean climate.
Over the course of a day the club naturally caters to differing uses, from the keen swimmer or gymnast to mixed family groups later in the day and club members in the evenings. The combined restaurant, bar, bistro adapts the atmosphere as the day progresses, changing the style of catering, opening and closing terraces, the club is open for business until late in the evening.
