World Architecture Festival 2022 shortlisted revealed
By Editorial Staff -

The first phase towards the 2022 World Architecture Festival (WAF) live event in Lisbon included the announcement of the shortlisted projects of both completed and future buildings – the latter having their own category and awards: WAFX. The theme of this year’s festival, now at its 15th edition, is no coincidence: “Together”, both literally – being this the first in-person event after three years, from November 30th to December 2nd – and figuratively, researching architectures that respond to the renewal of collective life post-pandemic and in the light of commitments to combatting climate change.

Architects and designers from around the world will gather on this occasion to present their shortlisted projects to a live jury composed of Mario Cucinella, Tracy Meller, Sanjay Puri, Gonka Arik Caliskan, Sir Peter Cook, Yui Tezuka, Shane O’Toole, Eva Jiricna, Issa Diabaté, Nadia Tromp, Jo Noero, Ann Lau and Nigel Coates, who will determine the winners of the categories eligible for World Building of the Year, Landscape of the Year, Future Project of the Year and Interior of the Year. Furthermore, projects from across the shortlist will be selected for Special Prizes including the Best Use of Natural Light Prize, Best Use of Certified Timber Prize and the newly introduced International Building Beauty Prize.

The 2022 shortlist celebrates the best new completed buildings and landscapes – including Foster + Partners, 3XN, Zaha Hadid Architects, Studio Gang, Nikken Sekkei, Mecanoo and White Arkitekter –, 68 international interior projects and, through the WAFX Award, 20 projects showcasing new cutting-edge architectural concepts and proposals addressing global societal and environmental challenges and trends.

Finally, 65 interior projects have been shortlisted by INSIDE, the sister festival of the WAF dedicated to the finest examples of interior design, internationally. Design firms tobe featured in this year’s shortlist include: Woods Bagot, Cox Architecture, Benedetti Architects and M Moser Associates.

Paul Finch, director of the WAF program, commented: “We are looking forward to meeting in person to carry out category judging and then our best-in-show awards. […] We are delighted to be hosting the event in the magnificent city of Lisbon and look forward to re-engaging with our architect and designer friends from across the world”.
