THE PLAN 158, the seventh issue of 2024
By Editorial Staff -

THE PLAN 158 is the seventh issue for 2024. The cover features the Joslyn Art Museum’s new Rhonda & Howard Hawks Pavilion, designed by Snøhetta and Alley Poyner Macchietto Architecture.

In the editorial, “A Low-Contrast City,” Michael Maltzan explains how a city’s identity – Los Angeles’, in particular, with its complex, constantly evolving personality – can be integrated into its buildings by adopting its distinctive features rather than drawing on conventional models. The studio works to design homes and spaces that foster diversity and connection, and, therefore, address contemporary urban issues, such as the interaction between public and private spaces, densification, and the ability of architecture to anticipate future change, and establish connections with culturally and socially isolated areas.

This issue’s Letter from China column is dedicated to genarchitects. This studio is an example of young, independent Chinese architects who, shunning the current taste for spectacle, are designing architecture that’s attentive to typology, structure, and materials. They transform buildings and urban environments with focused projects and soft moods that integrate landscape and architecture.

In the Letter from America column, Raymund Ryan looks at the Thorne Residence, designed by d’ARC architects in Sewickley Heights. The project combines contemporary and historic American design, linear structures, and a restored barn through the elegant use of industrial and local materials, creating architecture that dialogues with the landscape, and incorporates references to tradition and modernist art.

THE PLAN 158

Raymund Ryan has also penned an article about architect Edwin Chan’s work with property developers Prince Concepts. Through modern residential projects and post-industrial landscape design, Chan (EC3) creates innovative, sustainable living spaces, fostering social interaction and a sense of community in a context that reflects both the industrial past and contemporary aesthetic pragmatism.

In Omaha, Nebraska, Snøhetta and Alley Poyner Macchietto Architecture have designed the Rhonda & Howard Hawks Pavilion. A structure that redefines accessibility, the pavilion creates a dialogue between past and future through a “floating” design that celebrates its setting while offering an immersive museum experience, enhanced by modulated natural light and expansive views across the entire complex.

The new Deutschlandhaus in Hamburg, designed by Hadi Teherani Architects, is a sensitive and innovative reinterpretation of the historic Kontorhäuser, offering balanced public and private spaces through the use of red clinker, a covered internal courtyard, and advanced natural ventilation systems.

THE PLAN 158

Chilean architect Cristián Izquierdo Lehmann explores the potential of prefabricated timber elements to create sustainable residential accommodation. Marked by their horizontality and centrality, forms that are both functional and poetic, and expressiveness created with materials, his designs foster social interaction and integration with the natural environment.

THE PLAN 158

In Milan, Balance Architettura has transformed the former Bicocca Superlab industrial building into a sustainable business center, retaining its industrial character, while enhancing the interaction between materials and internal and external spaces. This harmonious and engaging architectural experience has earned LEED Gold certification.

In the Zoom column, we interview French-Lebanese designer Lina Ghotmeh, who discusses light as both a physical phenomenon and a tool for social connection, analyzing its natural, astronomical, cultural, and social aspects.

THE PLAN 158

In the Focus column, Valerio Paolo Mosco looks at two Italian projects: the De Amicis 154 residential building in Pescara, designed by Giovanni Vaccarini Architetti, and the LB36 residential building in Bologna, by TECO+partners.
