is the fifth issue for 2023. The cover is dedicated to the African Sustainable Agriculture Research Institute, a project by Bechu & Associés. The photograph was taken by Fabio Mantovani.
The September issue opens with the editorial “Free and Adaptable: Public Libraries for Communities”, by Stella Betts. The essay, an extension of an advanced course at the School of Architecture at Yale University, is divided into various small chapters, each offering an in-depth examination of a particular topic. The piece features five design examples from the same number of New York public libraries from which to draw inspiration.
In the Letter from America column, Raymund Ryan discusses the Gran Acuario Mazatlán “Mar de Cortés,” designed by Tatiana Bilbao Estudio in Sinaloa, Mexico. This massive piece of architecture, which sits outside a definite temporal or stylistic framework, uses basic geometric shapes to give form to a monolith with multiple levels and dimensions.
Can architectural contrast create added value in restoration projects? Yes it can, and it’s demonstrated by the Plato Contemporary Art Gallery, designed in Ostrava, Czech Republic, by KWK Promes. The project, examined in the Old & New column by Michael Webb, plays with contrasts between the dark bricks of a monumental former factory and the white finishes of the new sections of the building.
Bernard Tschumi Architects designed the Biology-Pharmacy-Chemistry Center at Université Paris-Saclay, Paris. The complex occupies the perimeter of the site, creating an inverted U, in which six buildings are connected by pedestrian suspension bridges. Still in France, PietriArchitectes has designed the Porte Bleue residential complex, whose most distinctive feature is its façade, which comprises a web of arches that follow one another in a modular sequence.
In Dutchess County, New York, nArchitects have designed a private home on the edge of a forest. The design is based on an archetypal barn, widely used by the local community, with a façade that fits harmoniously into the surrounding landscape.
We also spend some time in Italy, with Palazzo MC, restored by Corsaro Architetti. The building is located in the heart of Cisternino, one of the most charming villages in Puglia’s Itria Valley. By subtracting volumes, the architects have created a green patio beneath a large skylight in the middle of the home.
Located between the desert and the Atlantic Ocean in Foum El Oued, Morocco, the African Sustainable Agriculture Research Institute is the work of international studio Bechu & Associés.
THE PLAN 148 signs off with the feature “A Look at the 2023 Architecture Biennale,” in which Yehuda Safran focuses on the 18th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice.

THE PLAN 148, the fifth issue for 2023, opens with Stella Betts’ editorial “Free and Adaptable: Public Libraries for Communities.” The projects examined in this issue range from aquariums to residential complexes, museums, homes, public buildin... Read More
