The Medelan: the story of a place where history and modernity overlap

Published by THE PLAN Editions, The Medelan tells the story of the regeneration of Palazzo del Credito Italiano, a building in Milan’s Piazza Cordusio, once the center of the Lombard capital’s business district. The work of GLA for its client DeA Capital Real Estate SGR, the project has transformed the entire block previously occupied by the UniCredit headquarters into The Medelan, a mixed-use complex comprising retail, offices, restaurants, and entertainment venues.

The Medelan is located in one of Milan’s most important historical and architectural settings. It comprises three interconnected buildings: the Credito Italiano building, a building known as Magazzini Contratti, both built in the early 20th century and designed by Luigi Broggi, and a wing designed by Giovanni Muzio in the 1960s, which completes the block bordered by Piazza Cordusio, Via Grossi, Via Santa Margherita, Via San Protaso, and Via Porrone.

The Medelan weaves together history and modernity, with its fully renovated spaces – from the large vault in the basement to its panoramic rooftop terrace – offering brand-new experiences. The rooftop itself has views across the center of historic Milan and the changing skyline of modern Milan, reflecting the dual nature of the project.

The complex examined in this book occupies a large site with an irregular pentagonal shape. It comprises three buildings, two historical and one contemporary, which, built at different times, previously met the growing needs of Credito Italiano until the bank, now known as UniCredit, relocated its headquarters to the UniCredit Tower.”
