The Forest in a Room is a celebration of the beauty of cork, the Mediterranean region, and sustainable comfort. First exhibited at Milano Design Week 2024 by Diasen at the Rossana Orlandi Gallery, the installation is now the centerpiece of a new exhibition at the Calangianus Cork Museum in Sardinia. The exhibition opened on July 18 and will run through May 4, 2025. With The Forest in a Room, designer Giulio Iacchetti has created an allegory for a cork oak forest and all the activities that go on inside it. Encircling the installation is a low dry stone wall, while it has a granulated cork forest floor and stepping stones that represent a forest trail. Its 15 columns, finished with cork-based paint, each feature a different effect and different texture. Supplied by Diasen, the 55 blocks that surround the work and its 23 stepping stones are also cork-based.

While The Forest in a Room is an allegory for a cork oak forest, a series of events will also take place during the exhibition to help people get to know the cork manufacturing process. These have already included a visit to a cork oak forest conducted by a team of cork strippers, who demonstrated the decortication process.

“Because of the way we use cork in our paints and bio-mortars, we’ve established some excellent relationships with the Calangianus community and teams of cork strippers,” says Diego Mingarelli, president of Diasen. “This is why it seemed appropriate to transfer this installation, which we created with Giulio Iacchetti for Milano Design Week, to its natural home in the Calangianus Cork Museum.”

The Forest in a Room, is also a symbol of Mediterranean beauty.

“The two days were a great opportunity to show off the beauty of this Mediterranean material to many people who weren’t aware of it, including Joost Bakke, an Australian designer and expert in sustainable materials, who came to Sardinia for the event,” continues Mingarelli. “For our firm, this is an important opportunity to convey the Diasen identity and to broaden people’s horizons regarding the uses of cork. It’s also a confirmation of how important it is to maintain deep and lasting relationships, not just with clients, but also with every member of the supply chain.”
