Barozzi Veiga: commitment to culture and innovation

Cultural and educational architecture are key parts of the work of Italian-Spanish design studio Barozzi Veiga, established in 2004 in Barcelona by Fabrizio Barozzi and Alberto Veiga. Barozzi grew up in Rovereto, Italy, and graduated from the Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia (IUAV). Veiga was originally from Santiago de Compostela and trained at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Navarra. Both have always pursued excellence as the fundamental objective of all their projects, which typically have a strong innovation component.

Barozzi Veiga’s portfolio includes architectural and urban projects, for both public and private clients, conceived and developed with artisanal care and painstaking design. A few of its works include the Ribera del Duero headquarters in Roa and the Infanta Elena Auditorium in Águilas (both in Spain, 2011), the Szczecin Philharmonic Hall in Poland (2014), the Museo d’Arte dei Grigioni in Switzerland (2016), the Brunico Music School in Alto Adige (2018), the Cantonal Museum of Fine Arts in Lausanne (2019), the new headquarters of Tanzhaus in Zurich (2019), and the Artists’ Ateliers in London’s Design District (2021), which is a central element of the urban regeneration plan underway on the Greenwich Peninsula.

Involved in projects around the world – from Belgium to China, Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States – the studio is based in a 19th century apartment in downtown Barcelona, where its international and multidisciplinary team of 25 professionals work. Recently, Barozzi Veiga was commissioned to create a new masterplan for the Art Institute of Chicago and to design the new headquarters of Oolite Arts in Miami.

International awards and exhibitions

Barozzi’s and Veiga’s talent and commitment have seen them win numerous prestigious awards, including the Ajac Young Catalan Architect Award (2007), the Barbara Cappochin International Architecture Award (2011), the Medaglia d’Oro all'Architettura Italiana for best first work (2012), the Young Talent Award for Italian Architecture (2013), and the Design Vanguard Award (2014). In 2015, the Szczecin Philharmonic Hall was awarded the Mies van der Rohe Award for European Architecture, the International FAD Opinion Award, and the Life in Architecture Award. In 2018, the Museo d’Arte dei Grigioni was awarded the RIBA Award for International Excellence. A year later, the studio won the Chicago Atheneum International Award, the Best Architects 20 Award, and the AD Award Architects of the Year.

Barozzi Veiga’s works have been featured at major international exhibitions, such as the installation A Sentimental Monumentality at the Venice Biennale in 2016, the solo exhibition On Continuity at the IUAV in 2021, as well as at exhibitions at the Politecnico di Milano (2022) and at the House of Art in České Budějovice in Budweis, Czech Republic (2022). Since 2019, a selection of its drawings and models have been part of the permanent collection of the Center Pompidou in Paris.
