Evolution, ecosystem, collaboration and sustainability - these are the keywords for the 62nd edition of Salone del Mobile.Milano, an international showcase of one of Made in Italy’s top sectors. The exhibition will take place at Rho Fiera from April 16th to April 21st. On Tuesday morning, the Strehler theater in Milan saw the presentation of the trade fair’s theme, based on the fact that today’s world requires a collective effort and that adopting a systemic approach is the key to be able to evolve.
Approximately 1,900 companies will participate at the Salone del Mobile 2024, 30% of which are non-Italian. Exhibition spaces will cover an area of more than 172,500 sq. m on a single floor. The Salone Internazionale del Mobile, the Salone Internazionale del Complemento d’Arredo and Workplace3.0 will take place along the biennial events EuroCucina and the International Bathroom Exhibition. SaloneSatellite, a free-access event dedicated to young talents under 35, will also return and celebrate its 25th anniversary with an exhibition in the spaces of La Triennale, from April 16 to 28.
In order to evolve, should we not start from what people before us left behind? The press conference of the 62nd edition of Salone del Mobile, held at the Strehler theater, opened with this question posed by theatrical research group Sotterraneo.
The introduction and chairing of the conference was entrusted to journalist and writer Mario Calabresi, in a dialogue with Maria Porro, President of Salone del Mobile, and other professionals who have worked on the exhibition setup, from spaces design and artworks installation to the development of the cultural program.
As Porro explains, the spaces layout places visitors at the center, offering them an engaging and satisfying experience. This was achieved also thanks to the contribution of neuroscience principles, applied for the first time in the design of a trade fair by Lombardini22, the studio that has rethought the layout of the biennials dedicated to kitchen and bathroom furniture.
The new collaboration with the Department and School of Design of the Politecnico di Milano introduces an observatory for the analysis of the Salone "ecosystem" and its social-economic impact on the territory.
Three large installations will be the highlight of Salone del Mobile 2024. Curated by Antonio Monda and designed by filmmaker David Lynch as a portal to the trade fair, lnteriors by David Lynch. A Thinking Room (pavilions 5-7) is characterized by the same dreamlike logic of his movies.
Under the Surface, created by Accurat, Design Group Italia and Emiliano Ponzi for the International Bathroom Exhibition (pavilion 10), invites visitors to think about the theme of water saving and the role the bathroom furniture supply chain in guiding us towards a more aware use of water.
The centerpiece of EuroCucina will be the large stage hosting six independent, international food magazines. Together with artists, designers and chefs from around the world, they will present a debate on the challenges and opportunities that the food sector offers to the world of design. All You Have Ever Wanted to Know About Food Design in Six Performances is the title of this initiative, where magazines Family Style (United States), L’Integrale (Italy), Linseed Journal (United Kingdom), Magazine F (South Korea), The Preserve Journal (Austria) and Farta (Portugal) are involved.
Last, but not least, the trade fair will offer a rich program of conferences, entitled Drafting Futures. Conversations about Next Perspectives and curated by Annalisa Rosso. Among the speakers, Pritzker Prize-winner Francis Kéré. The morning talks will take place in the Drafting Futures arena designed by Formafantasma, who retrieved 50% of materials from the previous edition’s structure. In the afternoon, the round tables will address current topics such as artificial intelligence, the relationship between boating and design, and all the news in the hospitality sector. In this edition, the Salone del Mobile Library will be inaugurated, also designed by Formafantasma.
