Tradition and modernity can harmoniously live alongside one another without diminishing the historic essence of a place. The new ME Mallorca Hotel by Melià embodies this as its interior and exterior renovation works dexterously conserve its original 1960s features in a new key accenting sustainability and innovation.

This approach has taken it to be the most modern of the resorts belonging to the chain with over 250 properties located in 35 countries, while the hotel also stands as the symbol and mirror of a far-reaching redevelopment project involving the entire tourism domain of Magaluf in the Calvià area of Majorca. Central in this renovation was also improvement to the hotel facilities in terms of sustainability, cost-effectiveness and quality: these aspects are distinctive too for the surrounding edifices, tracing out a shared image. Alongside this is a new concept of a bespoke and balanced experience based on every guest’s needs and setting out from design, technology, gastronomy and music.

As Jordi Basora, Construction Project Manager for Melià, explained, this could have not been achieved if the building’s outside and inside had been treated separately, which is why the refurbishment work for the interior spaces was carried out simultaneously to that for the façades. In this latter case, while the original Santanyì sea stone (from the town by the same name and used in constructing many of the island’s oldest and most famous edifices such as the Palace of the Almudaina, Bellver Castle and Palma Cathedral) was in fact conserved, Trespa® Meteon® panels were applied to it. The porousness of the Santanyì stone means that water is easily absorbed and, as a consequence, causes a gradual deterioration of the building face. Chosen also for their colours, textures and finishes, the panels are components in a sunscreen and insulation cladding system that yields ventilated yet decorative façades: grey aluminium Trespa® Metallics in a Rock finish and Trespa Wood Decores in Matt finishes were selected for the ME Mallorca.

The space created under the cladding layer, anchored to a metal substructure with visible rivets, ensures air flow and constant ventilation, and the gap width was decided through collaboration with the architect, Alvaro Sans, and the installation team. Creating a dry environment, easy cleaning and minimal maintenance are other features of Trespa® Meteon® that, paired with the above characteristics, brought changes to the initial hotel renovation project.

In fact, the works began in 2012 and continued in subsequent stages: some parts of the hotel - particularly the two side façades - were added while the works were in progress and the hotel was open to the public. Panels from the Metallics collection were used for these two façades and, due to their different angle in relation to the sun's rays, give the impression of varying nuances when compared to the others. The result is a linear two-block edifice featuring a taller tower with a sophisticated front that acts as a backdrop to palm trees and sandy beaches.

“Something completely new and different yet respecting the environment has been created in order to return energy and vitality to the area,” commented the architect, involved in redeveloping resort hotels worldwide.
