Against the magnificent backdrop of Cortina d’Ampezzo – known locally as the Queen of the Dolomites – the second Cortina Design Weekend took place from July 12 through 14.
The event comprised three days dedicated to design, architecture, and examining the relationship between the mountains and the contemporary world, as part of the search for that delicate balance between conservation and innovation.
The conferences held at the Grand Hotel Savoia’s congress center alternated with a series of parallel events and guided tours. These added an extra dimension to the three-day event, letting visitors delve deeper into the weekend’s topics through first-hand experiences.
On Friday, July 12, the Menardi carpentry shop became the setting for a standing dinner hosted by Chef Luigi Dariz from the Da Aurelio restaurant. The historic family-run workshop was transformed into a place where cuisine, culture, and tradition came together in perfect harmony.
Then, during the afternoon of Saturday, July 13, participants visited two current projects of Era Group Immobiliare, a local business that redevelops historic Ampezzo homes. After a short visit to the company headquarters, housed in a historic building designed by Edoardo Gellner, participants toured the site of a current redevelopment project. The firm’s approach to bringing local heritage properties back to life, while respecting local traditions and building techniques, and reclaiming construction site materials, were all on show.
This approach could also be seen at the second site. Involving a house dating from 1500, the project showed clear signs of the respect and care invested in the intervention.

On Sunday, July 14, the last day of the event, participants visited the former ENI Village in Borca di Cadore, an awe-inspiring project that grew out of synergy between visionary architects Enrico Mattei and Edoardo Gellner, with the collaboration of Carlo Scarpa.
Dolomiti Contemporanee organized the Progettoborca workshop to foster practical measures for the permanent reactivation of the site. Held in collaboration with both Italian and international schools of architecture, the project catalyzes ideas and people to create a network that, in collaboration with local authorities, will bring the village back to life.
The visit ended at the Hotel Boite, where the organizers showcased the work done during a training camp organized by Dolomiti Contemporanee and the Scuola Italiana di Design, with the backing of Cortina for Us.
