Pordenone’s New Hospital: Efficiency, Functionality, Innovation

The 475-bed facility, inaugurated in mid-December, was designed to continuously integrate new technologies and adapt to future needs

Politecnica

Pordenone hospital

Located in central Pordenone, this new hospital, operated by the Western Friuli Health Authority, acts as a hub for the western parts of Italy’s Friuli Venezia Giulia region. The project was the work of a team of architects coordinated by Politecnica, who collaborated with Pinearq, Manens, and Cooprogetti Pordenone.

With a capacity of 475 beds, the hospital was needed to meet a growing demand for healthcare services, including ICU beds, which are a crucial aspect of modern hospital design.

Built on the old hospital grounds, the new structure blends harmoniously with an urban context defined by buildings from different eras. Its ground-level podium sets up a dialogue with the heights, colors, and permeability of the surrounding buildings to create visual continuity. The portico, a distinctive element of traditional Pordenone architecture, is reinterpreted through a contemporary lens by integrating the hospital with the arcades along Corso Vittorio Emanuele and Via Montereale.Ospedale di Pordenone Photography Gabriele Melloni, courtesy of Politecnica

The facility offers a range of services, including diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of acute conditions, making it a point of reference for other hospitals in the region. With numerous public social-health services, and a team of general practitioners and pediatricians, the facility will centralize services and, therefore, simplify patient access.

Harmonizing with the surrounding green spaces, the hospital is sustainable and energy efficient, with innovative technologies for energy management and sustainability. During construction, special attention was given to waste management and soil reuse, to reduce the environmental impact of this phase.
