The lemoal lemoal architecture paysage practice was commissioned to design the Pierre Chevet sports hall for the town of Croissy-Beaubourg. Their design solution utilized hempcrete blocks making Pierre Chevet the first new public building with this materiality-type in France.

A clever design solution

The collaboration between manufacturer, architects and construction companies resulted in a clever and sustainable structure. One of the goals of the project was to use long-lasting materials with multiple performance attributes. The wooden half-vaulted porticoes, which maximize the free space for practicing sports, are supported by a wall of hempcrete blocks. These hempcrete blocks were chosen for their wide-range of qualities — high thermal, acoustical and structural performances as well as fire-resistance. The blocks are manufactured with hemp hurds which is an agricultural material extracted from hemp. The fibers are from plants cultivated locally in France and then assembled less than 500 km (311 miles) from the project site. Hempcrete building blocks boost the commercial value of short supply chains and mobilize actors in France from the farmer to the construction worker.

Typically, hemp is a residential application that is treated with a finishing coat of plaster on the exterior. In this case, upkeep was ensured my covering the façades with cladding. The cladding panels can be replaced individually as needed in the future. Interior surfaces on the lower sections have been treated with hemp plaster. On the upper portions, the hempcrete blocks have been left exposed to maximize their acoustical qualities.
