The new Princeton University Art Museum building, designed by Adjaye Associates with Cooper Robertson as executive architect, will open to the public on Oct. 31, 2025. The 13.560 m2 volume will double the institution's space for exhibition, learning, gathering and visitor services.
Located in the heart of Princeton University's historic campus, the museum is three levels hegh and built around nine interconnected pavilions, with ground-floor entrances on all sides. The design concept aims to propose new ways of approaching artworks and create social spaces capable of fostering cultural exchanges. Two “artwalks” invite those on campus to pass through the museum.
The Princeton University Art Museum's functional program includes 7,430 m2 devoted to exhibition spaces, most of which are located on a single level. Added to these are more than 1,100 m2 dedicated to education and gathering areas; this area includes two creative workshops, six classrooms, an auditorium, two seminar rooms and the Grand Hall, which can accommodate up to 265 people at performances or other events. Additional user-friendly spaces such as a restaurant, outdoor terraces and an outdoor theater complete the project.
Enriching the new museum are four artworks by Nick Cave, Diana al-Hadid, Tuan Andrew Nguyen and Jane Irish, and two site-specific sculptures created by Jun Kaneko and Rose B. Simpson.
The opening of the Princeton University Art Museum will be accompanied by a series of free, public events, which will be followed by a busy schedule of events throughout the season, including conversations with artists, panel discussions, film screenings, performances and creations designed to bring people of all ages closer to art.
