THE PLAN continues its look at the five venues that will host the 2023 FIBA World Cup, the basketball world championships, to be played in Asia, August 25 – September 10. The first part of this two-part article looked at the three facilities in the Philippines. In this article, we’re focusing on the two other venues: the Indonesia Arena in Jakarta and the Okinawa Arena in Japan.
The Indonesia Arena is a brand new multipurpose indoor facility that can seat 16,500 fans. Built as part of the Gelora Bung Karno sports complex in Jakarta, it opened in June 2023 and is the largest sports facility in the country. Based on green building principles, its design was inspired by gotong-royong, a philosophical concept embedded in Indonesian culture that emphasizes the importance of working together as a community. To celebrate the unity of the nation, the concept was expressed in concrete form by drawing inspiration from the image of a woven basket – an object that typifies local tradition – resulting in a design reminiscent of several baskets stacked on top of each other. Specially designed for the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup, Indonesia Arena will host conventions and other sports and entertainment events after the championships are over.
Okinawa Arena is the largest event hall in Okinawa, southern Japan. Designed by Tokyo-based studio Azusa Sekkei, it seats up to 10,000 fans and is the most cutting-edge indoor entertainment and sports arena in the country, offering spectators a fully immersive experience. he Ryukyu Golden Kings, one of the most popular professional basketball teams in Japan, play their home games here.
Operating since February 2021, Okinawa Arena is already establishing itself as a premier venue for concerts and a variety of indoor sports. With six aboveground levels, it has a total area of 297,800 sq.ft. (27,700 m2). It has parking for over a thousand vehicles and includes two rooms for conferences and events, and an entire VIP floor.
Japan was extremely enthusiastic to have some of the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup matches played on Japanese soil. With everything set to go, the country is now ready to proudly show off its futuristic technological and architectural achievements to the world.
