The winners of the 2024 Global Award for Sustainable Architecture were announced on April 19 at the awards ceremony held at Università IUAV di Venezia. Every year, this award recognizes five architects who have addressed society’s needs through the principles of sustainable development and a participatory approach to architecture.
The five winners of this year’s award, themed “Architecture Is Education,” were selected by an international jury of architects and educators on the basis on an innovative pedagogical approach that fosters an ethical and responsible understanding of the profession among young people.
Established in 2006 by architect and lecturer Jana Revedin, the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture aims to promote innovative and sustainable architecture. Every year, the award recognizes five international architects for their contributions to the creation of architecture that addresses ethical, environmental and social challenges.
Organized under the patronage of UNESCO, the award was sponsored this year by Saint-Gobain, a world leader in sustainable construction.
Iyas Shahin and Wesam Al Asali of IWLAB Laboratory, Syria and Spain – Established in response to the lack of vitality in architectural practice in Syria and the Arab region, IWLab has become a pioneer in architecture, heritage, and urban studies in diverse socio-economic settings.
Andrés Jaque, founder of Office for Political Innovation (OFFPOLINN) and dean of Columbia University School of Architecture in Spain and the United States – Jaque addresses architecture challenges through a combination of design, research, and activism as he works to unveil the mechanisms that make architecture act as an agent of exclusion. Collaboration with communities is a fundamental aspect of his work, which actively involves people and local resources to create spaces for listening and collective action.
Marina Tabassum, founder of Marina Tabassum Architects in Bangladesh, architect, educator, and leader of community empowerment projects that fuse learning, action, and teaching – Tabassum’s work embraces contributions from experts, students, and residents to identify models aimed at improving living conditions. The creation of the Foundation for Architecture and Community Equity (FACE) highlights her commitment to addressing these challenges.
Ciro Pirondi, cofounder of Escola da Cidade in Brazil – Founded in 2002 by the Associação Escola da Cidade – Arquitetura e Urbanismo (AEC), this institution stands out for its bureaucracy-free operation and democratic, financially autonomous management. It has moved away from exclusively providing architectural education to focus on profitability in the real estate sector.
Klaus K. Loenhart, architect and landscape designer, Institute of Architecture and Landscape in Graz, Germany and Austria – With his Landlab project at the Graz University of Technology, Leonhart explores the cocreation of architecture to reduce energy consumption and improve wellbeing, aiming to regenerate biodiversity and promote health through a social design practice based on the environment.
With the conclusion of the 2024 edition, the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture has recognized 85 architects from around the world, including five Pritzker Prize winners: Wang Shu, Alejandro Aravena, Balkrishna Vithaldas Doshi, Anne Lacaton & Jean-Philippe Vassal, and Diébédo Francis Kéré.
The 2024 Global Award for Sustainable Architecture jury is composed of seven architects:
