The Cesare Roversi Talent Program, a scheme created by the Cesare Roversi specialist interior design company, is a small yet important opportunity for young people to start following their dreams and see their ideas come to fruition. The company established the scheme to build a series of installations and architectural interventions at the company’s historic headquarters in Moglia, Mantua, expressing young architects’ talent.
The Cesare Roversi Talent Program is underpinned by workshops at which participants are mentored by international architectural firms like BIG, SANAA, David Chipperfield Architects, Herzog & De Meuron and MC A - Mario Cucinella Architects, all of whom were invited by YACademy, a Bologna-based school of higher education in architecture. The designs developed during the workshops move forward from drawing to execution.
Herzog & De Meuron tutored a group on a design for a 200-sq. m covered area to add to the company’s two production warehouses, creating not just a direct passageway but an additional production space.
The work group came up with a functional and sustainable solution: a pavilion with a curved roof bordered by two parallel curtains that connect the existing buildings, creating a dedicated storage area in the center.
As well as being able to host various events, the new space maintains high permeability with the backdrop through curtains made of a series of pillars interspersed with glass windows. Two garden-adjacent zones offer staff areas for relaxation and refreshment.
Materials like wood and glass were chosen for the project to ensure flexible, potentially replicable construction. The glazed façade dialogues with the site, referencing the existing buildings and their arched window design.
“We managed to proceed through all stages of design in a very short time”, says Andreas Fries of Herzog & De Meuron, who ran the workshop. “We brought together four students from India, Ecuador, Albania and Croatia, and myself from Switzerland. We created something simple yet beautiful, functional and appropriate out of different ideas, origins, expectations and visions. The client seems happy, and we are very eager to see this project built”.
