Contract: Mass-Production for Custom-Built Spaces is a new publication from THE PLAN dedicated to interior architecture, industrial design, and project customization. It showcases the work of leading architects and designers who have responded to client briefs with unique solutions that combine mass production with high-quality customized choices.

This issue begins with a look at accommodation and catering, a sector that’s undergoing growth and change, stemming from the redevelopment, modernization, and extension of historical buildings, as well as new builds expanding the market.

HOTEL LUTETIA – THE REBIRTH OF AN ART NOUVEAU SYMBOL | Paris, France
Wilmotte & Associés


Together with his Studio Wilmotte & Associés, internationally renowned architect, urban planner, and designer Jean-Michel Wilmotte accepted the challenge offered to him by The Set Hotels, the owner of the Lutetia, to renovate this historically, culturally, and architecturally important building. The main difficulty of the project was to breathe new life into the Lutetia, which, dating from 1910, is the first luxury hotel on Paris’s Left Bank, while respecting its identity.

LEFAY RESORT & SPA DOLOMITI – LUXURY AND SUSTAINABILITY | Trento, Italy
Studio Apostoli


Alberto Apostoli oversaw the interior design of the new Lefay Resort & SPA Dolomiti, a five-star luxury resort set in woodlands. The aim was to boost the notoriety of this prestigious facility with its international personality – a building that sets itself apart from the typical local style of architecture to embrace a more Italian flavor and strong references to its mountain setting. Contemporary luxury, Italian lifestyle, and environmental and energy sustainability were the keystones of the creative process.

GRAND PARK HOTEL – DESIGN, ART, NATURE | Rovinj, Croatia
Lissoni Casal Ribeiro

The Grand Park Hotel overlooks the island of Santa Caterina. Its site features sloping green terraces, intended to harmonize the architecture with its pine forest setting. The building was designed by Croatian firm 3LHD. The interiors, however, were the job of Lissoni Casal Ribeiro, a division of Lissoni & Partners, which oversaw the design of all the rooms, common areas, and exterior public areas, which, following the promenade, lead to the city’s historic center.

NOBU HOTEL LOS CABOS – A FUSION OF STYLES IN AN EXCLUSIVE RESORT | Cabo San Lucas, Mexico
WATG and Studio PCH

Honolulu-based firm WATG was set up in 1945. From the outset, it has focused on hospitality, tourism, and design. Today, with a team of over 430 professionals, it’s assumed international proportions and is able to look after every architectural detail. It has brought its decades of experience in innovation to the design of the Nobu Hotel, combining Japanese tastes with Mexican style.

LA SUITE HOTEL – RELAXATION AND ELEGANCE JUST A STONE’S THROW FROM THE “SASSI” | Matera, Italy
Studio Marco Piva

Studio Marco Piva is a design studio and creative center that experiments with new solutions on every scale, from architecture to interior design. It created La Suite, a five-star hotel in the heart of Matera, just a stone’s throw from the “Sassi,” a UNESCO World Heritage site. The area, known since the seventies as the vegetable garden of the Giardino Porcari palace, has been transformed into an essential, elegant complex that reinterprets, and adapts to, the typical picturesque features of Basilica’s wonderful capital city.

THE STUDENT HOTEL – NEW FRONTIERS OF HOSPITALITY | Florence, Italy

The Student Hotel (TSH) is the largest complete connected community in the world. It came into being thanks to the foresight of its Scottish founder, Charlie MacGregor, who, in 2006, created in Amsterdam the first student accommodation that offered a new vision of coliving. The Student Hotel’s fluid, hybrid spaces have little in the way of barriers, making them highly inclusive. With its rethought approach to the concept of living, the complex rewrites the student accommodation rule book, offering accommodation to travelers, mobile professionals, and entrepreneurs.

THE VINES – LOCAL DESIGN AND CULTURE | San Miguel de Allende, Mexico
Hembert Penaranda – Officina Architetti

The Vines project involved planning 300 acres (120 hectares) of land near an area of outstanding natural value. The work of Hembert Penaranda – Officina Architetti, the project involved creating a fully serviced residential and hotel complex within a large area planted with vineyards. From the creative perspective, the goal was for nature to keep the upper hand over architecture and create a development centered on wine, based around The Vines brand.

HOTEL GARDEN – AN EXTENSION IN HARMONY WITH NATURE | Pieve di Ledro, Trento, Italy

In 2004, Roberta Di Filippo and Roberto Salvischiani set up architecture and visual communication studio “studio raro.” The firm was responsible for the modernization and extension of the Hotel Garden in Pieve di Ledro. The project aims to attract more tourists to the mountain areas by catering to the new needs of the hospitality industry and encouraging the relationship with its natural surroundings.
