Cesare Roversi Talent Program: combining the talent of young architects with the insight of established professionals
By Editorial Staff -

The Cesare Roversi Talent Program is an initiative of Cesare Roversi, a company specializing in interior design and furnishings for the domestic, hotel, and office markets. The program involves bringing together the talent of young architects and the insight of important names in contemporary architecture to create a series of architectural projects to be built at Cesare Roversi’s headquarters in Moglia (Mantua).

The projects are being designed at five workshop sessions for YACademy students, in which participants are being tutored by architects from internationally renowned architectural firms BIG, SANAA, Studio David Chipperfield Architects, Herzog & De Meuron, and MC A – Mario Cucinella Architects.

Marco Roversi, CEO of Cesare Roversi Arredamenti, explains:

The Talent Program is a way we’ve found to open our company’s doors to young people – to their enthusiasm, to their talent, and to their commitment. We’re offering them a short but significant chance to follow their dreams and see their ideas take physical form.

The designs produced at the workshops will go from drawing to reality, an important form of recognition for the young architects involved as they work alongside this group of established professionals.

The first workshop, led by MC A – Mario Cucinella Architects, centered on the design of an independent entrance to a former porter’s lodge so that it could be used as accommodation by people interning with the company. The project has now entered the engineering phase.

The second workshop, which recently ended, was held in Basel and led by Herzog & De Meuron. The project in this case was a roof to bridge two factory buildings. Measuring some 2150 square feet (200 m2), the new covered area created will be used as both a transitional and production space.

The next workshops will be hosted by BIG/Bjarke Ingels, SANAA, and David Chipperfield.

The BIG workshop will focus on redesigning the firm’s main entrance and pedestrian access to make them more representative of the corporate image and more visible from the street, where cars pass by at speed.

The workshop with SANAA will involve the design of a transitional space between the heart of the firm, where furniture is designed and admin tasks are performed, and its production facility.

The David Chipperfield studio will guide young architects in the construction of a roof to expand the production and warehousing facilities around the cutting area to optimize material storage.

The workshop with MC A – Mario Cucinella Architects centered on the design of a vertical connection to Cesare Roversi’s intern accommodation. Located on the company’s property and visible from the street, the building also plays the role of a landmark.

The selected project is a staircase with an organic shape that brings together the other elements present in the garden. Inspiration for the design came from the wood and wood shavings produced during furniture making and from the growth rings of tree trunks. The design is both elegant and forms a harmonious relationship with its natural setting.

Davide Raffaelli, architect at MC A – Mario Cucinella Architects and tutor of the Roversi Workshop, had this to say about the experience:

Nowadays, it’s hard for young architects to see their ideas realized. This workshop gave a group of talented students a chance to experiment. It will also give them an opportunity to get hands-on experience with the design by building it. From the educational and human perspectives, it was a rich experience …. Working with this new generation, I witnessed their huge desire to express their talent. Their experience with MC A also gave them a sense of the dynamics of working with a large architectural firm. The resulting project has its roots in the history of Cesare Roversi, while drawing its inspiration from the style and commitment of the Cucinella studio.
