Alvisi Kirimoto. History, Nature, Work

A “sartorial” approach to design is the hallmark of international studio Alvisi Kirimoto, founded in Rome in the early 2000s by life and career partners Massimo Alvisi and Junko Kirimoto. In its twenty years of designing architecture, the studio has completed numerous projects in Italy and abroad. These form the subject matter of the new book Alvisi Kirimoto. History, Nature, Work, published by THE PLAN Editions. The title reflects the three fundamental and recurring themes of the architects’ work, while also representing the perspective they’ve taken to discuss the studio’s history and its most important projects.

Winners of numerous international competitions and awards, Massimo and Junko continue to approach every project as an opportunity to create designs capable of improving the quality of life of their users by thoroughly analyzing the identity of each location. Massimo has a more technical bent, and focuses on the urban and social dimensions. Junko, winner of the Japan Institute of Architects’ Golden Thesis Prize, prefers a more artistic approach, her work revealing attention to detail and a minimalist sensibility. The coming together of these two complementary figures, united by a passion for what they do, has produced a design methodology founded on dialogue and experimentation that imagines abstract spaces to be designed using light and multiple planes.

Designing Empty Space

“Massimo Alvisi and Junko Kirimoto would seem to be from very different worlds. Kirimoto was born in Yokohama in 1970, while Alvisi in 1967 in Barletta, in the southeast of Italy. While Junko Kirimoto studied architecture at Kyoto Seika University, her future partner had attended the Faculty of Architecture in Florence. Kirimoto worked in the offices of Shin Takamatsu in Kyoto and Kazuyo Sejima in Tokyo before venturing abroad. They met in 1994 when both worked for Massimiliano Fuksas in Rome. Massimo Alvisi went on to work for eight years in the offices of Renzo Piano (RPBW). It was in 2002 that the pair created their own office in Rome. This volume marks the 20th anniversary of that collaboration which has prospered with projects such as their Podernuovo a Palazzone winery designed for the Bulgari family, offices for a very prominent figure in the American hotel and architecture world in Chicago or in a different vein the Viale Giulini Affordable Housing in Alvisi’s native Barletta”.
