Following the live presentations of the category winners of the 14th edition of the World Architecture Festival - who were announce a few weeks back -, on Friday, December 3rd, the overall winners were unveiled. These obtained the following awards: World Building of the Year, Future Project of the Year and Landscape of the Year. The World Interior of the Year award - a result of WAF’s sister-event INSIDE/World Festival of Interiors - and the WAFX Award - which recognizes project proposals tackling today’s global issues - were also given out.
After carefully listening to the architecture practice’s presentation, the super-juries awarded the following projects:
The jury composed of Paul Finch (Programme Director World Architecture Festival), Abdelkader Damani (Director Frac Centre-Val de Loire and Artistic Director Biennale d’Architecture d’Orléans), Nuno Gonçalves Fontarra (Associate Partner Mecanoo), Kim Herforth Nielsen (Founder and Creative Director 3XN Architects), and Christina Seilern (Principal Studio Seilern Architects), praised the way the building “addresses the role of architecture in the new world of recycling and zero carbon. […] And it reminds us that buildings can be fun!”
The jury composed of Jeremy Melvin (Curator World Architecture Festival), Mariana Simas (Director studio mk27), Ankur Choksi (Principal Studio Lotus), and Peter Cook (Architect, Professor and Writer) was impressed by the way “this project started with the ruins of the world’s greatest collection of grain elevators, and through wonderfully seductive imagery envisages a future for them, the City of Buffalo - and of post-industrial cities”.
The jury composed of Zaš Brezar (Landzine), Lily Jencks (LilyJencksStudio | JencksSquared), and Todd Langstaffe-Gowan (Todd Langstaffe-Gowan Landscape Design) commented that, “Al Fay Park is a thoughtful and intelligent response which takes into consideration pressing contemporary social and environmental issues. It is more over a delightful and biodiverse oasis in a dense desert city”.
After beating 100 finalists to win the final accolade, judges were impressed with the project’s “sensitive and inventive remodeling of a modest traditional building in a remote setting. […] A beautiful hybrid idea executed with poetry, sophistication, and warmth”. The INSIDE festival jury was composed of Nigel Coates (Creative Director Nigel Coates Studio), Oliver Salway (Founding Director Softroom), Johnny Chiu (Founder J.C.Architecture), Yael Reisner (Director Yael Reisner Studio), and Manuelle Gautrand (Founding Partner Manuelle Gautrand Architecture).
