The Manhattan-North fitness centre in Vienna has been going strong for over twenty years. Its wellness area has now been completely overhauled and updated by an Alice Koller project to create a new zone of complete and utter relaxation. Large rear-lighted panels on the entrance walls reproduce the Manhattan skyline. The light changes from day to night and back again, taking guests into a time-frame of its own, removed from the daily bustle outside. The wellness area plans focus especially on lighting so as to achieve a relaxing atmosphere that creates visitor wellbeing. The sauna booths are lit by mineral light shining through salt crystals for ionization, or pink quartz crystals to protect from harmful radiation such as electro-smog in particular. To meet health and hygiene regulations inside the wellness unit the floors and walls were tiled in GranitiFiandre’s new Active Clean Air & Antibacterial Ceramic™ - a first-ever in Austria. Active Clean Air & Antibacterial Ceramic™ tiles are manufactured by an exclusive technique whereby minute particles of titanium dioxide are applied to the tile at high temperature; under natural or artificial light these particles trigger a process of photocatalysis, reducing 80% or as much as 99.9% of the bacterial strains that normally cling to surfaces, such as Klebsiella pneumoniae or Staphylococcus aureus. Using Active tiles thus purifies the air and protects people from coming into direct contact with surfaces infected, say, with fungi. Active-clad surfaces are also hyper-hydrophilic: to clean them one needs no chemical detergents - another significant advantage to the indoor atmosphere. Innovation has always been the watchword at GranitiFiandre which this year celebrates its 50th anniversary. Worldwide feedback confirms that clients greatly appreciate a firm’s attention to product quality and protection of the natural heritage. Such care is not just evinced in wise use of raw materials, but by the kind of research over the years that has led this firm to the idea of Clean Air & Antibacterial Ceramic™, a whole new generation of tile helping to improve our living environment.
