Toronto’s Shangri-La Hotel, designed by James K.M. Cheng Architects and Hariri Pontarini Architects, is in the financial district, in a 66-floor glass skyscraper that dominates the city skyline. The hotel is on the first 17 floors, with the rest used for 393 luxury housing units. The hotel flooring is white, graphite and dark brown oak-tree boards. The 12 mm thick and 90 mm wide boards are smoothed and chamfered on four sides, before being given a special fire-retardant coating. Mapei was involved in laying the floors (over 27,000 sq m), providing a soundproofing layer at the client’s express request. To create the base for laying the flooring, an initial coating of Primer L was applied to the substrate, with the self-levelling Novoplan 2 then used on top of this. Where the floor was not sufficiently smooth, a skim coat of Paniprep FF was added. Once a smooth base had been formed, Ultrabond ECO 995 was applied so the wooden boards could be laid in a fishbone or straight pattern.
