Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, Terminal 2 at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai is an extension of the existing airport, the country’s leading air hub. It will boost passenger flow by 40 million annually. The structure rises four floors, grouping arrivals and departures - both domestic and international - under a single roof to cut transfer distances and thus streamline boarding and disembarking. Passengers are welcomed in hall with an amazing grid-like ceiling supported by pillars that flare at the top, with the overall design drawing on the patterns and textures of local traditions. Despite the immense size, the sensation is one of lightness and familiarity for any passenger walking through. Mapei’s involvement in the construction of the terminal was to supply the materials for the granite floors. The laying of the large slabs required the use of adhesive suited both to natural stone and high footfall. Mapei’s solution was Keraflex Maxi S1 and the two-component epoxy-polyurethane Keralastic T. Before laying the granite, the cracks in the screed were sealed with Eporip, and after laying the slabs, the grouting was done with Kerapoxy.
