Active Clean Air & Antibacterial CeramicTM - Eco-active tiles for a healthier environment

  • Active Clean Air & Antibacterial CeramicTM - Eco-active tiles for a healthier environment

Fiandre, italian world-leading company in the production of technical porcelain floor and wall tiles, got started in business in the Seventies and Eighties and grew with the years, perfecting their product range by experiment and research into the technological and aesthetic potential. They offer a complete service, combining production, design and installation. Since the year 2000 the new engineering division Granitech has been experimenting on aspects such as energy saving, safeguarding the environment, ease and speed of installation. The last word in Fiandre customer service is the new Fiandre System which includes consultancy, design and laying of materials, providing teams of specialists and on-site knowledge.
As part of their research and innovation - and in partnership with Iris Ceramica - Fiandre have recently patented a new process producing a floor and wall tile material, Active Clean Air & Antibacterial CeramicTM, that plays an anti-bacterial role and reduces pollution. This was released to the Milan press in April. As the geologist and First Researcher of the CNR Mario Tozzi explains, Active stands at the cutting edge of innovation and research in the way it harnesses productive to environmental requirements.
Active makes use of the properties of titanium dioxide TiO2. This is transferred onto the technical porcelain tile at a high temperature by an exclusive innovatory manufacturing technique, certified by the Bologna Ceramic Centre and the TCNA (Tile Council of North America), which employs titanium dioxide in micro-particles that are harmless to public and worker health. In the presence of light, TiO2 activates a process of photocatalysis that does away with up to 70% of organic and inorganic pollutants, as well as completely eliminating some of the main bacterium strains. It is estimated that an area of 1000 sqm of Active Clean Air & Antibacterial CeramicTM has, on the reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx), an effect equal to that of 20 timber trees. We can therefore say that ACTIVE slabs really interact with the environment. The active principle behind titanium dioxide - the activator of the photocatalytic process - is not subject to wear and tear and hence is not consumed in time. The photocatalytic process also makes surfaces treated with active hyper-hydrophilic, hence strongly attracted to water. This means that an invisible film of water is created across the surface of the material so that dirt slides off it. There is far less need for chemical detergents, which is yet another example of the product’s sustainability. The benefits to the air and hygiene that accrue from Active make it especially suitable for lining interior and outdoor surfaces, especially in the catering/accommodation sector, health units, schools, sports facilities and wellness centres.
