The 13th International Alvar Aalto Symposium was held in August 7th-9th, in Jyväskylä, Finland. Through the symposium’s theme, DO!, the future of architecture was examined from the perspective of doing. Hundreds of architecture lovers from around the world attended.
At the symposium, the processes of creating architecture was approached through four perspectives and keynote speakers. The event kicked off by looking at the local, led by Xiaodu Liu of Urbanus architects. On Saturday, Urban planning master Henriette Vamberg of the Gehl architects unveiled the social perspective and one of the most innovative pioneers, American architect Greg Lynn, led us into the digital world, while Brazil’s Marcelo Ferraz ended the day with a segment devoted to material.
Altogether the conference featured talks by more than 20 of today’s most fascinating creative figures.
The Symposium’s chair was architect Anssi Lassila, Director and Founder of OOPEAA Office for Peripheral Architecture.
The symposium was first arranged in 1979, based on Alvar Aalto’s original idea. Over the years it has gained popularity and taken its place as one of the world’s most important architectural discussion forums.
“In line with the original idea, the symposium aims to bring forth current issues and open-minded, insightful guidelines for contemporary architecture. The event also brings international atmosphere to the streets of Jyväskylä and raises awareness of the city and country among those advancing issues of quality in the built environment,” said Tommi Lindh, Alvar Aalto Foundation director.
The Alvar Aalto Foundation produces the event in cooperation with the Museum of Finnish Architecture, Architecture Information Centre Finland and the City of Jyväskylä. The Symposium’s arrangements are supported by the Ministry of Education and Culture and the City of Jyväskylä.
