Piuarch Modern Sophisticated Contemporary Architectures
Faenza || Italy
Course Description The course focuses on a study of the unwritten rules for the processes influencing specific aspects of architecture. A few of the buildings designed by the Piuarch architectural practice are presented, exploring how these fit into the surrounding urban setting. Initially, general considerations are dealt with, but these soon narrow to a specific project. The text, pictures, numerous plans and construction details, with the related key, are used to provide a description of an office block at the Bentini Headquarters. The course will provide an overview of Piuarch's latest creations, examining the interaction between the design, the context and the planned use of the building.
Learning Objectives After reading this article and studying the drawings, you will be able to:
Investigate the notion of an urban block through various Piuarch designs;
Illustrate the design decisions that were based on reading the particular urban context and the strategies used to deal with the differing climates;
Describe how the approach adopted represents continuity with the European urban tradition in a manner consistent with the historical principles of architecture, since these can still help us to conceive and build our cities;
Perform an in-depth analysis of a building created by the Piuarch architectural practice and then compare this to the practice's other work.
