Course Description The course examines a new-build contemporary-art museum: a “new object” and “fearless” landmark on the urban grid. The course material includes an introductory text, diagrams illustrating the architectural program, and numerous photographs. The reader will learn how this iconic building was developed and the process that led to the development of its particular form. Technical drawings and a construction detail with explanatory legend provide key information on execution. On completing the course, the reader will be able to explain the design strategies adopted and the technologies employed in this iconic building that “proclaims its presence unapologetically”.
Learning Objectives – after reading the article and studying the drawings, you will be able to:
Assess the innovative elements introduced in terms of interior spatial relations and the new building’s place in its urban context.
With the aid of the detailed construction diagram, describe the technologies used during execution and the structural and cladding materials chosen with a view to developing a strikingly iconic architecture.
Explain how the building’s singular linear spatial distribution also fully serves its functional requirements.
Analyze the design process that led to the particular architectural form of the building.
