Course Description The course looks at a contemporary architecture project whose form and materials, however, belong to the country’s ancient building traditions. The use of bricks alongside modern, high-performance materials makes for a new architectural entity that meets modern user requirements despite taking its creative cue from the past.
The course material provides a broad set of photographs, technical and concept drawings, and an introductory text. A construction detail drawing with explanatory legend shows clearly how the construction techniques integrate traditional and modern materials.
On completing the course, the student will be able to describe the importance of place and the use of local materials - in this case bricks - and how these have been seamlessly juxtaposed with other materials.
Learning Objectives After reading this article and studying the drawings, you will be able to:
Analyze the aspects of continuity and transformation achieved by combining traditional and contemporary architectural methods.
Describe spatial distribution in terms of the functions hosted by the building and user wellbeing.
Assess and describe the design choices made to obtain optimal climate mitigation.
Motivate the choice of materials and colors in terms of the esthetic results and with regard to how the building relates to its natural context.
