noa* (network of architecture) was comissioned to redesigned 88 rooms and suites of the existing “Family & Spa Grand Hotel Cavallino Bianco” in Ortisei (Val Gardena, Italy) meeting highest standards and its luxurious demand. Maximum flexibility characterizes the entire proposal, claiming lots of different room atmospheres for the entire family.

The new design of the hotel inspires the guests to spend their time deliberately. The hotel's new philosophy "Time is life, live it now!" becomes an integral part of the new interior design concept: the rooms can be organized with different living atmospheres, where you can spend time on your own, just with your partner or together as a family: “my time – kids time – two time – family time”.

A high degree of flexibility forms the basis of the overall design. Each room has special features that are designed specifically for children. The entire space can be converted with a few simple manual moves in various spheres. The flexible elements, removable, collapsible, or extensible create various living situations within a space that can respond to various requirements of the guests in the shortest time.
Sliding doors, folding sofas and beds, pull-out cots are those flexible elements that can serve the guest easily. When the large sliding doors of the children’s and parents room are open, they merge with the living room into a large family room. The parents' bed together with the unfolded sofa create a large table and play area. If the children are asleep, the sliding door is closed and the parents have the possibility to spend time alone: relaxing on the sofa, watching TV in bed , enjoying a romantic dinner... So it works in the bathrooms: the parent’s bathroom is connected to the children's bathroom with a sliding door, so when the door is open there is a big wet area.
Whether time you spend alone, with your beloved or as a family, the room adapts to its users and creates a particular value of coexistence.

The new rooms and suites offer the guests the highest standards of accommodation. The flexibility and the transformable furniture and space of the newly designed rooms go hand-in-hand with the hotel concept of spending time together as a family, as a pair or alone. Each room has two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a small cooking corner (pantry) which is very practical for parents with little babies to cook a fast baby food or milk. The kids’ bathroom is adapted to the little guests. A small toilet and a wash basin with 2 sinks where the bigger one can be used as a baby tub. The smaller basin is accessible with steps also for the littlest ones.

To involve the characteristic elegance of a grand hotel, consciously classical elements were taken up and implemented or combined in a modern way: modern, rectangular chairs were papered with classic capitonné; the wallpaper - a popular wallcovering in the 70s - was staged in frame with a classic motif. The lighting consists of on a modern contemporary design. Classic elements such as the ornaments of the wallpaper and cornices create a harmonious and elegant ambience.
The design responds with clean lines, neutral colours and soft tones combined with locally sourced high quality materials. Classical elements such as ornaments and cornices respond to the history of the Grand Hotel, while creating a harmonious and elegant sense of space... Instead of kitsch and silly decoration, you will discover individually bespoke objects like mouse hooks, reminding that this is place designed for children.

Curriculum

noa* is the essential expression of a collaborative work-ethos: the young team of architects & designers, led by founders Lukas Rungger and Stefan Rier and based in Bolzano (Italy), explores and examines interdisciplinary methods of design, continuously evolving depending on both nature and requirements of each project. By following the concept of „emergence“, where the whole is perceived as being far greater than the sum of its parts, a holistic approach and strategy is central to noa*s way of conceiving design.

Teams are mixed temporarily to address imminent challenges and find innovative solutions. noa* serves as a stage (or platform) for architects, designers of interiors, graphics or fashion... as far as musicians and historians... with the collective aim to use the resources of field specialists at its best.
