A punctuated concrete volume creates office spaces with indirect light from the northern side in response to its location in Kanpur city which has a climate with an average annual temperature of 30°C.
Located on the corner of two roads on the north and west, the built volumes occupy the southern portion of the site creating a large landscaped space towards the north shielded by the building.
Six-meter-high curvilinear volumes fluidly move within the landscaped space at the ground level housing the buildings reception & public spaces merging them with the garden. Conference rooms for meeting visitors, a large cafeteria and a gymnasium are created within these curvilinear volumes.
Designed as a corporate office for a single company the planning creates an energy efficient building with a 4M wide buffer space on the southern side that houses service areas and circulation areas to mitigate the heat gain into the working areas. Kanpur city has an annual average temperature in excess of 30° C with long summer months. The sun is in the southern hemisphere throughout the summer. Reducing heat gain from the south for a building in this location increases its efficiency tremendously reducing the need for air conditioning.
Each of the rectilinear office spaces above the ground level open into twenty feet high landscaped terrace gardens that facilitate indirect north light whilst creating usable outdoor spaces. The changing locations of terraces creates individual identities for each floor avoiding the repetitive character of most office buildings. These large terrace volumes punctuate the enclosed volumes creating landscaped pockets at each floor. Facing north these terraces will only get indirect north light making them usable for most of the year. Simultaneously the indoor office spaces achieve natural indirect light & a vibrancy with greenery visible from each part of the office spaces at every level.
Contextual in response to its location, the cube office merges open & built spaces creating landscaped areas equivalent to the area of its site. The large landscaped areas achieved by the design illustrate how an office building can be built within the urban fabric of a densely populated city creating garden areas equivalent to the size of the plot. The design is responsive to the climate of its location and to the need of its users, generating office spaces that require much lower energy consumption due to their orientation.
