Cirfood District in Reggio Emilia is a dedicated space for sharing cultural and social perspectives on the future of food and food service. This research and innovation center is the brainchild of Cirfood, one of Italy’s largest organizations operating in collective and commercial catering and welfare services, with an additional presence in Belgium and the Netherlands. The design, by Iotti + Pavarani Architetti with Studio LSA, translates the cooperative’s vision into architecture, creating a humancentric hub to foster a development policy based on the values of social, economic, environmental and cultural sustainability. The designers conceived Cirfood District as a venue to cultivate imagination around feeding the future, embodying the company’s vision to “Feed the Future”.
One of a handful of hubs in Italy and Europe equipped with an integrated gastronomic research system, Cirfood District was established in partnership with Pollenzo Università di Scienze Gastronomiche. The District’s sensory laboratory, kitchen and experimental restaurant provide a participatory platform oriented toward applied research projects, promoting the exchange of ideas, activities and experiences with partners, schools, institutions, start-ups, companies and universities. The organization’s foundational open approach to the community reflects and expands the very concept of a cooperative as an entity for people to work together, pooling their efforts, work, skills and initiatives to achieve a common goal: in this case, to experiment with innovative ideas that generate value for the community and well-being for consumers, now and into the future. The project deploys solutions that, as well as being sustainable, accessible and inclusive, are mindful of waste reduction and seek to enhance the cultural values that revolve around food.
