The design philosophy at Pooja Shah Architects based Mumbai is underpinned by a vision of architecture as a way of recreating the sense of harmony and balance found in nature. The same is true of the Devotié Home brand, which specializes in furnishings and products. This approach is vividly evident in two residences constructed in the coastal town of Alibaug, in the State of Maharashtra: Krishna Villa and Madhuvan Wadi.
The first house, home to a carpenter, blends functionality with esthetics, celebrating the beauty of teak wood to reflect the owner and his craft. The site’s rigid linearity inspired a design that unfolds as a journey of discovery, guiding visitors from the main entrance at street level to a grove located at the rear. The house is organized over two levels: the ground floor is dedicated to a living area and master bedroom; children’s rooms occupy the first floor. Every aspect of the residence, from the largest structural beam to the smallest finishing detail, tells a story of meticulous care and precision.
In contrast, the Madhuvan Wadi residence was designed over a single level, making it an ideal countryside retreat for a weekend getaway. Built in exposed brick and enveloped by lush greenery, the building is divided into two blocks, unified by a centrally positioned main entrance. One wing contains the master bedroom and living area, which features a double-height space characterized by a wooden structure and large glass windows; the other wing accommodates a second bedroom plus adjoining bathroom. The two volumes are arranged around a large fruit tree, the focal point of the floor plan. A compact kitchen enables the owner to embrace the “farm to table” concept, preparing meals with organic produce harvested on their own land.
