Natural light from large skylights floods the House of Light, a private residence and medical studio designed by Lalit Deshmukh & Associates in the heart of Sangli, Maharashtra. The 281 sq. m site is located in a densely populated residential area surrounded by buildings to the north, west, and south. Despite the limited footprint, the architects designed a home that honors the tradition of the Indian wada, reinterpreting the typical courtyard home by adding roof-mounted windows to enable natural light to brighten all rooms, maximizing overhead lighting without sacrificing privacy. The Agra red stone and concrete band façade lends the building a sleek, solid appearance. A parking area and terraces are protected by a transparent acrylic structure.
Spaces dedicated to the medical office and service staff area are located on the ground floor. The first floor accommodates a living room and dining area, oriented toward the north and east to aid air circulation. In the northwest corner, a kitchen was designed to foster dispersal of the aromas of traditional Indian cooking. A bedroom completes the layout on this floor. The second floor offers two additional bedrooms, both equipped with en-suite bathrooms and walk-in closets, along with a games room.
The choice of solid teak windows with adjustable shutters ensures efficient natural ventilation and privacy, eliminating the need for curtains. Not only does this approach reduce energy consumption, it enhances the building’s overall efficiency. Integrated solar energy further boosts sustainability and energy savings.
