Inpractice conceived the Modest House in Pol Neighborhood in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, as a subtle implant into the surrounding urban landscape. The house is situated within a pol, a community-based housing settlement common to western India. Exposed inside and out, the building’s concrete walls capture the essence of Ahmedabad’s modernist heritage. A curvilinear corner defines the entrance to the house, which unfolds over two levels, both arranged as an open floor plan. The ground floor serves as the living area; the upper level is dedicated to the bedroom, complete with a reading nook. Natural light floods into the interiors through a large skylight, allowing sunlight to cascade down to the lower level thanks to an area of double-height floor plan. Additional light enters through windows, recessed into the walls as necessary to balance openness with the need for privacy.
A small first-floor terrace connects to a rooftop garden via an
external staircase.
Also in Ahmedabad, the Few Walls and a Roof project is a studio with an attached apartment associated with a larger residential development currently under construction, which will eventually replace the studio itself. The project revolves around a metaphor that likens the walls of a building, held together by the roof, to the individuals that make up a family. Designed to host highly flexible work environments, the structure is dotted with a series of green spaces, which will continue to serve the residential complex in future. The first phase is nearing completion; phase two commences after dismantling previous offices.
Showcasing a commitment to circularity, the plan is to recycle bricks from the building, cast bricks from demolition-sourced debris, and reuse metal roofing.
