Constructed in Turin’s Lingotto district for the Olympic Games, the new “Oval” ice speed skating stadium was also designed as a multipurpose venue to help revive a rundown, former industrial area on the outskirts of the city.
The simple, asymmetrical roof curves smoothly from east to west, its tubular steel structure resting on pillars set 100 m apart. The exterior anticipates the layout of the interior.
Great care was taken to choose functional, low-maintenance materials. Like the Tosoni façades. The north and south façades are completely glazed. The curved north wall has distinctive aluminium-clad steel “fins”. Tilted at varying angles, they engage with the glass panes so as to compensate for the curvature of the main surface.
Along the side walls, pre-perforated toughened, laminated glass panels (DecorFlou) coated with a milk-white film are “hung” on a steel structure by means of a series of rings and hooks strong enough to ensure windbracing and load bearing.
The flush, satin-finish wall is broken on the east side by three pods on the first floor. These are clad inside and out with large, pre-weathered Rheinzink titanium zinc shingles, a resistant material that will gradually change appearance due with a natural patination process.
