Christian Biecher Designer of the Year

Recent years have witnessed the rise of several new French stars in the designer galaxy. The Milky Way traced by Philippe Starck is now ablaze with the likes of Christian Biecher, 2002 Designer of the Year for ‘Now, design à vivre’, the design side of Paris’s Maison&Object.  Already familiar to the hall of fame for his architectural creations – the interior of Corova, the new temple to creative cuisine in Rue Marbeuf is his – Biecher is now making a name for himself as a designer. This year the Musée des Arts Décoratifs is staging a personal exhibition of his work while international companies are beating a path to his design studio door. A collection of his soft furnishings designed for Soca was on show at the 2002 edition of the Paris show and he was among the designers of the Liv’it team in Milan in April. In May, New York’s ICFF featured a series of soft furnishings created for the US design company Bernhardt.
Born in 1963 and trained under Henri Ciriani at the Paris Belville School of Architecture, Biecher was assistant to Bernard Thscumi from 1985 to 1992. From 1989 to 1998 he also taught at New York’s Columbia University. Besides his academic career, Biecher also boasts architectural achievements in both France and Japan. His latest works include the Tur building, a commercial construction in Tokyo and the Mitsui Pavilion, again in Tokyo (both completed in 2001). Then there is the interactive video hall at the Arsenale Pavilion in Paris – completed in 2002 – and the still-to-be-realised design for a new fashion shop opening in Tokyo next year. Biecher has already proved his prowess in innovative interior designs for the fashion world with three boutique layouts in Paris: in chronological order, the Pellat Finet cashmere boutique, the store of Tsumori Chisato (a pupil of Issey Miyake) and most recently, Joseph, the well-known British brand that has set up shop, with adjacent cafeteria, in no less than Rue Saint-Honoré.
