Malka, a restaurant and cultural space in West Palm Beach, Florida, transports guests to Tel Aviv through materials and design elements that create a narrative steeped in the moods of the Middle East. A concept restaurant created by chef Eyal Shani, Malka has locations also in Tel Aviv and New York City. The design of the Florida location marks the United States debut of Israeli studio Kimmel Eshkolot Architects, founded by Etan Kimmel and Michal Kimmel Eshkolot.
Housed in a 1930s structure recognized by the city’s Historic Preservation Department, the restaurant spans 975 sq. m between indoor and outdoor spaces. The design team paid special attention to preserving the original building, while also incorporating a contemporary façade and new design. The result is a project that has breathed new life into its historic setting with custom-made furniture and material-driven textures that become an integral part of the dining experience.
The centerpiece of the kitchen is a large open-fire grill that is visible to diners from every corner of the dining room. Another important feature is the back wall of the bar area. Created with custom-made perforated concrete blocks, the wall rises to the ceiling in a curving arc with a vaulted profile. Repeated in various parts of the restaurant, this reinterpretation of a mashrabiya – a passive cooling system typical of traditional Middle Eastern architecture – divides the dining area into different zones without invasive barriers.
In front of the kitchen are two kitchen experience tables, made of chocolate-colored granite slabs with a concealed track for assembling Cor-Ten steel trays in various configurations, creating an ideal setting for shared dining. Overhead, amber-toned pendant lamps cast a warm glow on the scene, suggesting the element of fire while harmonizing with the rusty tones of the Cor-Ten steel. Combined with a palette of warm colors and natural materials – including timber, marble, granite, and travertine – the result is a cozy and contemporary environment.
A Mediterranean-inspired garden, designed in collaboration with landscape architect Keith Williams, is a perfect place to relax in vibrant West Palm Beach. Featuring a carefully selected assortment of native and exotic plants and outdoor furniture, the garden is a sophisticated space whose presence resonates throughout the restaurant. An olive tree pays further homage to the Mediterranean sea.
A kosher restaurant that strictly adheres to Kashrut dietary laws, Malka is also a cultural space that hosts guest speakers and programs intended to deepen the understanding of, and connection to, Jewish culture, thus enriching the local community.
