A retreat in the Hamptons

Meadowlark, a residence designed by Garnett.DePasquale, nestles in the green landscape of Sag Harbor, a charming town on the eastern shore of Long Island, in the Hamptons. A vacation home, it combines modernity with simplicity amidst the natural charm of one of New York State’s most sought-after locations. A former whaling port, Sag Harbor combines its authentic fishing village feel and rich maritime history with a vibrant street scene of restaurants, upscale boutiques, and trendy cafés.

Originally conceived as an expansion of the clients’ main home, Meadowlark was transformed over four years of planning into an independent residence. The lot chosen for the construction was one of the smallest in the village, which meant significant restrictions in terms of size and height. Not only did the local regulations dictate the home’s distance from the road, but they also meant that the entire building had to fit within a 45-degree section of the site.

The house, on three levels, including a basement, presents as a solid volume, clad in dark timber planks. Almost completely opaque, the street façade creates a strong sense of privacy.
The rear of the house, which backs onto the garden, offers views of the greenery and swimming pool, creating an ongoing dialogue with the landscape. This contrast between the opaque front and the fully glazed rear gives the home a sense of both privacy and welcome.

At ground level, there is a large living area comprising an open-plan kitchen where cream-colored floor-to-ceiling curtains modulate light and transparency, making the space both versatile and comfortable. A forest green sofa with a lively pattern references the shade of the glazed ceramic tiles that frame the fireplace, while also bringing the colors of nature inside. A timber coffee table on a large gray rug and two dove-gray armchairs complete the color palette of the living room, making the space a pleasant place to spend time. On one side of the living area, a green perforated metal pendant illuminates a round white table and chairs with a dark, glossy finish, creating an intimate dining space.

The kitchen includes an island counter. Streaked with white and ochre veining, its dark marble top complements the gold color of the faucet. Elegant dark brown furniture references the geometry of the façade, integrating perfectly with the wall paneling, which extends to the ceiling to create visual continuity.

A timber staircase leads upstairs to the main bedroom with garden views. The room has oak floorboards, while a neutral color palette of whites and beiges contrasts with dark-toned details, such as the spotlights above the bedside tables. A focal point of the bedroom’s en-suite bathroom is its white marble counter with dark veining, combined with elegant brass faucets. A walk-in closet next to the sleeping area is fully timber finished, while a round, dark-framed mirror reflects the warmth of the oak.

Externally, the house is characterized by its compact massing. The partially closed main façade provides privacy for the residents, while the rear elevation connects the interior spaces with the garden through extensive glazing.
