Essential and refined, grandiose and intimate at the same time, the Edition hotel chain’s first location in Italy has risen in Rome. The building, built in the 1940s and previously home to a bank, was transformed into a hotel, designed by 3c+t Capolei Cavalli Architetti Associati, with interiors by Studio Urquiola. Their non-invasive approach, both in the selection of materials and organization of the spaces, has preserved the architectural identity of the building.
New additions on the exterior were integrated into the rationalist façade, which stands out for the interplay of full and empty volumes and the double height windows, behind the imposing travertine portico and the bronze and wooden pergola leading to the entrance. At the same time, the original proportions of the interiors were maintained, fostering a harmonious continuity between inside and outside. The common spaces and the 23 rooms and suites are differentiated by the choice of materials, with more refined finishings in the public areas, like marble, travertine flooring, brass, and bronze, and more traditional finishings in the rooms, like peperino, local stone, and walnut wood.
The beating heart of the structure is the entrance lobby, a perfect place to entertain travelers, meet people, and sit in one of the lounges. The room, with a 7 m-high ceiling, features a neutral color palette including Navona travertine, used for the floor and wall claddings. The full-height, perimeter windows have long green curtains that introduce a note of color and recall the lush vegetation of the courtyard, seen through the large openings. Light-colored couches and sofas matched to the wood complement the marble finishing perfectly, creating a sense of order and simplicity.
The interior courtyard, adjacent to the lobby, was conceived as a green space placed between public and private, connecting the hotel to city life. The sensation is that of immersing oneself in an urban forest, surrounded by overlooks, climbing plants, and trees that create a lovely environment where it is possible to stop for lunch, dinner, or even just a coffee.
The ground floor houses Jade Bar, clad in Verde Alpi marble reflected on the black mirrored ceiling, and Punch Room, designed as an evening gathering space where one can have a drink in front of the fireplace. The space is completely enveloped in wooden surfaces and features a large bar surrounded by red velvet stools. The soft lights, couches embellished with fur covers, and embroidered cushions create an evocative environment, ideal for passing time after dinner.
The food & beverage offerings are completed by the Anima restaurant, which is distinguished by its simplicity of geometries and materials, and the panoramic bar on the seventh floor, The Roof. The ground floor restaurant is composed of two separate rooms, characterized by the bright blue and green colors of the seating and carpets. The walls are adorned with wooden paneling and black and white photographs, which give the restaurant a distinctive touch. The rooftop bar is located on a large green terrace with a pool and relaxation area; all unified by the used of travertine, recalling the hotel entrance.
The rooms, conceived as if they were wooden trunks, have walnut walls and floors with essential furnishings that create an intimate and cozy atmosphere. The bathroom, on the other hand, is completely clad in gray peperino. The choice of natural materials, together with the attention to detail, creates a feeling of exclusivity for guests. Spectacular views of Rome can also be enjoyed thanks to the large openings.
