Designed by GaS Studio with Parisotto + Formenton Architetti, the Casa di Langa luxury resort borrows evocative shades of earth, ocher, rust, dark brown and bordeaux from the vine-growing landscape around Alta Langa, home to Barolo wines. In more than 40 ha of rolling hillside covered in woodland and vineyards, the Cuneo province boutique hotel offers 39 rooms and suites, a restaurant, wine bar, cocktail bar and wellness spaces that feature a spa, gym and outdoor pool, plus a villa for holding private events. The design combines Piedmont tradition with sustainability to create a veritable hideaway for an exclusive stay in an exceptional Unesco-protected natural and cultural habitat. Respect for the local area pervades every aspect of the design approach, from landscape to architecture and interior design.

This esthetic, functional and environmental redevelopment has radically transformed an early 2000s structure that was only partially completed, rationalizing its original access routes, views and volumes. The new resort is arranged into three main wings laid out in a horseshoe shape around a central courtyard, sporting a sequence of large, richly-planted terraces that follow the line of the slight downhill slope. The interiors were designed to offer guests comfort, R&R and contact with nature, benefiting from panoramic views and generous outdoor areas: all rooms have a spacious loggia, while the Fàula restaurant, helmed by chef Daniel Zeilinga, features a large outdoor dining terrace. Clad in warm oak, the hotel’s rooms and public areas are furnished in Nordic and Italian styles, with locally-crafted pieces and contemporary artwork.Inspired by nature and vernacular architecture, the design presents a rich palette of colors and materials, combining infinite chromatic shades of autumn foliage with surfaces characterized by rough-finished textures.

Protected by brick filters and pitched roofs faced with brick tiles, the building’s façades, porticoes and external balconies reproduce the stylistic imprint of local rural buildings. While pursuing a sustainable, circular economy approach, the interiors engage with the local area’s warm colors and natural materials, including ancient local Luserna stone and raw-earth plaster. All timber is from forests certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, which promotes worldwide responsible forest management. The complex uses renewable energy sources: a geothermal and photovoltaic system provides heating and cooling; water consumed at the resort is recycled to irrigate the estate, along with water reprocessed via a special recovery system. The lighting design by PSLab enhances the architectural volume, creating a light gradient from inside to outside, using limited-energy consumption lighting fixtures and LED bulbs.
