Vorarlberg, Austria’s most western province, provides a favourable climate for high-quality architecture, first arousing international public interest in the 1980s. Helmut Dietrich and Much Untertrifaller are part of the second generation of architects to enjoy this propitious climate. They have won a number of competitions, assembling a versatile architecture portfolio that runs from single-family houses to housing estates, museums, commercial buildings, university sports facilities, cafés and historic buildings. Graduated from the Vienna University of Technology, Dietrich and Unterfrifaller were influenced by their teacher and architect Ernst Hiesmayr. In 1992, they won the international competition for the Festspielhaus in Bregenz, and in 1994, opened their practice in Bregenz. Other projects include the spa and event center arlberg.well.com in St. Anton, the new event and music venue in the Vienna Stadthalle complex, the ETH Sport Center in Zurich, the Convention Center Strasburg as well as the Sport Campus of the Technical University in Munich, along with large and small building commissions. Today, the office employs more than 60 collaborators in Bregenz, Vienna, St. Gallen and Paris. They place importance on the quality of concepts, architectural style, and precise details regardless of the dimension of the buildings.
