Architect Luca Pignata and his practice, Luca Studio of Architecture, have designed Villa Carmel, an elegant residence in the heart of California. Their design is all about welcoming in the green of the surrounding hills, endless horizons, and the natural beauty of this setting through essential lines and clean shapes with a contemporary look. Stone, timber, metal, and glass define its character, rhythmically interacting on each side of the building to allow the structure to seamlessly integrate into its setting. Large floor-to-ceiling windows give a rhythm to the façades, bring natural light into the home’s different spaces, and let the outside come inside as a key element of the interior design. Nature also takes a starring role in the outdoor living areas, with the home set in an extensive garden.
Secco Sistemi made an important contribution to this project, supplying the painted galvanized steel window and door systems. The OS2 75 system was chosen for its versatility, offering corner units and façade systems that create unique perspectives and focused sightlines. Large sections of the exterior walls use the system, with ultra-slim profiles supporting the sequence of doors, windows, and closed units.
Secco Sistemi window and door units enhance the elegant essentiality of Villa Carmel. The system’s ultra-slim profiles frame the glazed sections of the façades, delimiting their edges while creating contrasts with the warmth of the surrounding timber and the neutral tones of stone. The proportions of the system are a reference to the iron doors and windows of yesteryear – a characteristic that makes the product extremely versatile. With profiles that can be combined in infinite configurations, the OS2 75 system can transform its appearance with different quality materials and finishes, making it suitable for even historic applications.
From the performance perspective, the system offers true design versatility, its high performance making it suitable for applications with harsh weather conditions – in this case, on the Californian coast. This project used over 40 profiles with the OS2 thermal break system, giving the architects ample scope for different configurations to express their design vision of maximum transparency, pure lines, elegance, and an artisanal attention to detail. A feature of the OS2 system is the excellent relationship between the transparency of the glass and the lightness of their brass, weathering steel, stainless steel, and galvanized steel profiles.
