VELUX solar tunnel by Lovegrove - Natural light forges ahead

For years Velux has been researching into products combining technological innovation and sustainable use of resources, besides maximising the use of daylight inside buildings especially in corners that normally present a challenge to illumination.
One such product is the solar tunnel by which light can be channelled into ‘blind’ spaces, normally lacking daylight. The Velux solar tunnel outwardly resembles a skylight or the Velux mini-dome; it fits into the roof line, whether flat or sloping. Via an external captor device of self-cleaning toughened glass, it captures light on the roof and channels it indoors via telescopic tubing made of Miro-Silver alloy, a material that has a light reflectance of over 98%, regardless of the angle of the sunbeam. It can thus lengthen the hours/day in which enough daylight is conveyed indoors to avoid turning on artificial lighting.
Teaming up with designer Lovegrove gave rise to the new Velux Lovegrove solar tunnel which won the Red Dot Design Award 2010. Its drop diffuser distributes the light indoors, reflecting it onto the ceiling more or less brightly according to the height of the installation.
The idea behind Velux by Lovegrove comes straight from nature’s own forms: this simple yet elegant design accentuates the technological performance of a solar tunnel and enables one to be installed in every room of the house.
