RESTYLING THE CENTRAL STATION

Mapei has participated in the project

Revamping Milan’s Central Station was completed in 2015, using a project that focused both on restoring and shoring up the historical sections of this monumental construction in a combination of art nouveau, eclectic and rationalist styles, and on redoing the internal pathways, creating a new ticket office, adding shops and building a direct link to the underground station.

Mapei’s technical expertise and material’s were required to lay a new floor to replace the old worn out marble slabs. The client wanted a quick, but effective solution that could stand up to the constant, intense footfall of such a location.

The total floor area is about 4,000 sq m, with 400 sq m paved with asphalt tiles and the rest (3,600 sq m) with Sicilian pearl marble.

The old slabs were removed and the mortar bed was dug up to create space for a new substrate of Topcem binder and 0-8 mm gravel from Vaga (Mapei Group). The screed was reinforced with a special galvanised steel mesh and bonded to the underlying section using an adhesive layer made of water, cement and Planicrete latex.

Once the screed had set, the floor was laid, using Keraflex Maxi S1 adhesive for the marble slabs and Granirapid adhesive for the asphalt blocks. The latter adhesive is especially good for high footfall areas as it is strong and dries rapidly, allowing swift positioning of the floor. The joints between the marble slabs were grouted with Keracolor FF.
