Private House

This design, by Francesco Adorni and Marco Oriani for a building in Bresso on the outskirts of Milan, includes revamping, raising and extending a building from the early 20th century that sits at one end of a row of contemporary buildings. The work done resulted in a single detached house that could be divided into five independents units, if needed. Great importance was placed on the connections between inside and outside, building the living space around these. Since the idea was to preserve the existing building, especially the perception of the structure, the designers opted to highlight the new volumes by using different, complementary materials. The original edifice was a plastered building with limited brick inserts, while the extension is predominantly brick, with plastered sections. The result is a complex, yet homogeneous architectural organism, inside which the identity of each element is clear and readable. In this architectural design, the distribution of windows and doors plays a key role in the elevations of the new volumes. They have been specifically designed to minimise energy loss and guarantee an excellent visual interface between inside and outside for all the rooms. The doors and window frames, made of natural-finish larch, were manufactured and installed by Falegnameria Aresi, using Professionale, a 68 cm thick classic window model with slight modifications to the uprights and beams to give the design an even sharper appearance that foregrounds the transparency of the glazed surfaces. The cooperation between the project designers and Falegnameria Aresi produced different types of windows and doors, such as the ribbon windows, which only opens partially with a glazed parapet, or the large sliding glazed doors on the ground floor that connect the house directly to the garden. The focus on design also goes hand in hand with security. Most doors and windows were made with special glass and hardware to achieve anti-burglar class 2 classification, a category normally reserved for armoured or security doors.
