The advent of artificial intelligence is revolutionizing many sectors, and architecture is no exception. The concept of “AI-driven design” represents a union between human creativity and advanced computational capabilities, which allows for the creation of increasingly sophisticated and adaptive architectural solutions.

An example of this is the BR Home pop-up store, a result of the collaboration between Banana Republic and IMAGINE by CASATI, an innovative design studio founded by Stefano Casati. Opened last year in Los Angeles' renowned Design Quarter on Melrose Avenue, this space of over 450 sq. m aims to redefine the interaction between architecture and retail.

A bespoke Facade, generated with an AI Workflow

The main character of this project is the facade, a six-meter-tall structure is crafted from twenty bespoke metal cassette panels. Each panel features a custom water jet cut perforation inspired by the cane webbing technique. These elements have been integrated into an artificial intelligence workflow that optimized the self-supporting structure of the facade itself, addressing the site’s limitations with precision and innovation.

The Art of Lighting: a Night Time Metamorphosis

The facade of this project is not just a decorative element: it’s a style statement that uses the art of lighting to transform the structure and its impact on the surrounding landscape.

During the day, the sunlight striking the facade reveals the nuances of its brass finish, inviting passersby to explore the BR Home collection inside. After the sunset, a series of addressable LED strips, animate with a subtle pulsing effect, highlight the perforation to the forefront, transforming the facade into a night time spectacle that enchants passers-by.

Technology meets Craftsmanship

The integration of artificial intelligence at the design stage of this space was crucial for maintaining an iterative and collaborative approach among the various disciplines involved. Artificial intelligence has helped overcome obstacles related to the materials used, manufacturing techniques, and engineering limits, giving life to a structure that dialogues with both past and present.

The BR Home Flagship X IMAGINE by CASATI pop-up store is the result of the convergence of design, craftsmanship, and advanced technology. Through this project, Stefano Casati and Banana Republic have created a place that hosts, inspires, and transforms the perception of commercial space within the urban context.
